Hello healthy people,
griffen fitness studioGriffen Fitness is 12 years old! When we started in 2005, it was from the back of a bike with a homemade website, pre-social media. I’m pleased to announce that we have now purchased the studio property, and will be launching a new logo and website by the end of summer. This is just the beginning. Your input is valuable for our direction, and your opinion in this 2 minute survey most appreciated

The Truth About Marathons

post marathonA week ago I ran my first marathon. After over a decade training other people how to do it, I finally had the diary space to do it myself. It was my turn.  I’ve done loads of other events over the years, including a two-day multi-discipline race from one side of Scotland to the other. However the most important thing about marathon prep is to make sure you’ve factored in regular long training runs (3< hours) getting your legs ready. The bulk of my mileage was in the colder months of January / February before PT-ing got too busy. We practiced the route until we knew it intimately (we saw a lot of Prestonpans). The day itself was unusually warm, which is ironically pretty usual for Edinburgh marathon weekend. Hydration is hugely important and I spent much of the run watching how other people reacted to running in the heat. Of course there were those who set off too quickly and didn’t take onboard enough fluid, there were a few folk vomiting courseside towards the end. It was with a sense of achievement that I sprinted the final stretch to the finish line. Twenty years ago when I had a stroke I didn’t know I’d ever be able to walk a long distance, let alone run. On a personal level, I felt a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. It’s made me a better Personal Trainer, as preparation is hugely important in such an undertaking. Also getting a better understanding of what it’s like to run in a large crowd (more like a stampede) is a training consideration. In future I will know to advise potential marathon runners on the off-putting effect of a large group of runners. And that you are likely to lose at least one toenail...I'm relatively happy with my time of 4 hours 26 minutes (well, I always want to go faster). Husband and training buddy Andy did his first marathon too, and came in at a speedy 3 hours and 25 minutes. He is an excellent athlete, and he has an excellent coach... So, if you’d like to train for a particular event, This email address is being protected from spambots.
